چکیده
We propose a framework that brings together two major forms of default reasoning in Artificial Intelligence: applying default property classification rules in static domains, and default persistence of properties in temporal domains. Particular attention is paid to the problem of qualification, central in default reasoning and in any attempt to integrate different forms of this type of reasoning. We examine previous semantics developed independently for the two separate forms of default reasoning, and illustrate how these naturally lead to the solution that we propose in integrating the two. The resulting integration gives rise to domains where four different types of knowledge interact and qualify each other in an intricate manner. Through a series of examples we show how this knowledge qualification leads to intuitive conclusions. We prove that our framework of integration is elaboration tolerant: extending a consistent domain with additional action occurrences, causal laws, or static knowledge does not render the domain inconsistent. The conclusions that are drawn are always adjusted so as to gracefully accommodate the extra knowledge.

Tweety: A Comprehensive Collection of Java Libraries for Logical Aspects of Artificial Intelligence and Knowledge Representation
This paper presents Tweety, an open source project for scientific experimentation on logical aspects of artificial intelligence and particularly knowledge representation. Tweety provides a general framework for implementing and testing knowledge representation formalisms in a way that is familiar to researchers used to logical formalizations. This framework is very general, widely applicable, a...
متن کاملThe probability that tweety is able to fly
Consider the question of assigning a probabilistic valuation to a statement as "Tweety (a particular bird) is able to fly". We suggest that a natural way to proceed is to rewrite it as "a (randomly chosen) bird with the same observable properties of Tweety is able to fly", and consequently to assume that the probability of "Tweety is able to fly" is equal to the percentage of the past observed ...
متن کاملThe new Tweety puzzle: arguments against monistic Bayesian approaches in epistemology and cognitive science
In this paper we discuss the new Tweety puzzle. The original Tweety puzzle was addressed by approaches in non-monotonic logic, which aim to adequately represent the Tweety case, namely that Tweety is a penguin and, thus, an exceptional bird, which cannot fly, although in general birds can fly. The new Tweety puzzle is intended as a challenge for probabilistic theories of epistemic states. In th...
متن کاملN-glycosylation analysis of the human Tweety family of putative chloride ion channels supports a penta-spanning membrane arrangement: impact of N-glycosylation on cellular processing of Tweety homologue 2 (TTYH2).
The Tweety proteins are a family of recently identified putative Cl(-) channels predicted to be modified by N-glycosylation and, controversially, to contain five or six membrane-spanning domains, leading to the contentious proposal that members of this family do not share the same topology at the plasma membrane. In humans, three family members have been identified, designated TTYH1 (Tweety hom...
متن کاملCompeting accounts of contrastive coherence
The proposition that Tweety is a bird coheres better with the proposition that Tweety has wings than with the proposition that Tweety cannot fly. This relationship of contrastive coherence is the focus of the present paper. Based on recent work in formal epistemology we consider various possibilities to model this relationship by means of probability theory. In a second step we consider differe...
